Acura TL (2004-2008) Fog Light Bulb Replacement DIY

Source: AcuraZine

OK, here are the installation tips:

It took me 30 minutes for the first time, and less than 20 for the two times after that (I did not like the first yellow bulbs). The procedure looks worse than it really is, I am just trying to provide as much detail as possible.

WARNING –

As with all head light bulbs, the bulb of a Halogen bulb is under pressure (gas inside) and is important to remove any oils or dirt on the glass or the bulb may fail very early, or shatter inside headlight. Also, if the glass is scratched, it may explode inside the headlight. NEVER turn on the halogen bulb when outside the headlight!

Things needed:

Pair of thin work or rubber gloves to prevent hands from getting cuts (got them the first time), things are tight and there are a lot of metal edges around. Use them when removing and installing bulbs. Not essential, but keeps your hands in better shape.

Dry, soft cloth without any oil or moisturizer (used to wipe bulb clean before installing, this is important to remove any oils or dirt or the bulb may fail very early, or shatter inside headlight )

!!!!Owner’s manual – read section on fog lamp replacement first and notice direction to turn bulb for removal!

Note, when completed, bulbs and connectors face towards radiator (each side is facing the other bulb).

Start on passenger side first (easier to do)

See owner’s manual!

1. Pull up on black plastic cover behind headlight, it will unsnap from its mounting location (you need to pull). There are 6 mounting clips, pull up on front or rear section, there are two pins at each corner that fit in mounting holes, then pull up on side against fender (these are lock tabs).

2. Remove white power connector from lamp by pushing on button located on edge closest to wires (hard to see, but is ridged for grip), then pull straight out of lamp (it is on a 90 degree angle, so pull towards radiator) while holding button down.

Put gloves on.

3. Remove lamp by twisting black part that is left at back of bulb (where white connector came out of). Twist counter clockwise when looking at back of bulb (towards front of car), see owners manual for drawing.

4. Bulb is tight, turn approx 1/8 of a turn until it comes loose, then pull straight back from headlight housing (do not touch glass with hands!)

5. Clean glass portion of new bulb with clean dry cloth by gently rubbing it (do not scratch the glass)

6. Do not touch glass after cleaning, if you do, re-clean! Insert back into hole in headlight (look through front of fog light to see bulb line up with hole) in original orientation when pulled out (wiggle bulb and turn left and right until it fits against housing) and turn 1/8 of turn until bulb is firmly secured.

Take off gloves

7. Reconnect white connector with button side facing engine until a click is heard from the button.

8. Test fog light (Warning – do not test bulb outside of headlight as the halogen bulb is under pressure and may shatter if scratched, or if it gets wet, or has oil on the surface).

9. Reinstall black cover by lining up tabs next to fender first, then line up the two posts on the rear, then front and push down on top of them to go into holes.

Driver’s side replacement:

See owner’s manual! Picture shown is this side as it is more complex.

1. Remove black plastic behind headlight. First push tab on side closest to engine, next to battery, then pull up black plastic, there is one more tab next to fender, and two posts behind headlight. Firmly pull up.

2. Locate black cover/box between battery and head light, there are two black pins at the top, pull those towards battery straight out (remove one at a time to avoid dropping them into the engine compartment/frame) and remove the pin/clamp from the hole in the black plastic box, then repeat for other one (store pins separately so as not to loose them, away from car). Pull black/cover box up out of area (wiggle slightly to get it out)

3. CAI upper tube removal (see owners manual) is next, bellow the black box is a round tube that you can look down into (this is the input tube of the Cold Air Intake from the front bumper (the black cover is the mixing chamber, and the air intake to the car is in the drivers fender, this area allows water to escape to prevent vapor lock). You have to remove this tube (which is just the upper section). Wiggle the tube back and forth while pulling up on it until it unlocks from the lower tube (it has a lip on it that inter locks with the lower tube by friction fit) and pull it out of the car.

4. OK, now for the bulb.

5. Remove white power connector from lamp by pushing on button located on edge closest to wires (hard to see, but is ridged for grip), then pull straight out of lamp (it is on a 90 degree angle, so pull towards radiator) while holding button down.

Put gloves on.

6. Remove lamp by twisting black part that is left at back of bulb (where white connector came out of). Twist counter clockwise when looking at back of bulb (towards front of car), see owners manual for drawing.

7. Bulb is tight, turn approx 1/8 of a turn until it comes loose, then pull straight back from headlight housing (do not touch glass with hands!)

8. Clean glass portion of new bulb with clean dry cloth by gently rubbing it (do not scratch the glass)

9. Do not touch glass after cleaning! Insert back into hole in headlight (look through front of fog light to see bulb line up with hole) in original orientation when pulled out (wiggle bulb and turn left and right until it fits against housing) and turn 1/8 of turn until bulb is firmly secured.

Take off gloves

10. Reconnect white connector with button side facing engine until a click is heard from button.

11. Test fog light (Warning – do not test bulb outside of headlight as the halogen bulb is under pressure and may shatter if scratched, or if it gets wet, or has oil on the surface).

12. Reinstall CAI tube, it has a tab on the bottom of it, that fits into two notches on the lower tube located towards front of car near radiator (on tube that was not removed), these must be lined up to properly go back together (mine had white paint on the top of the three mating tabs so to see easier from factory). Push upper tube back into lower tube with these three tabs lined up. It will click into place, but you must rock it back and forth to get it to fully insert (make sure tabs line up).

13. Reinstall black box/cover (without plastic pins or you can loose them), once in position, insert one pin at a time through the mounting hole, into the hole in the frame, then repeat for other pin. Make sure the pins snap fully into the plastic sleeve.

14 Reinstall black cover by lining up tab next to fender first, then tab near battery, then line up the two posts on the front and push down on top of them to go into holes.

Done!
