Acura TL (2004-2008) Power Steering Whine Fix DIY

A lot of you new members are probably experiencing a power steering whine in cold temps < 60F, which goes away as the engine compartment gets warm. The culprit is the o-ring on the PS pump inlet pipe. The o-ring has become glazed & lost it’s original elasticity so it’s contracting more than spec and allowing air to enter the pump when the temps drop. The fix is simple, replace the o-ring. For you guys who are a bit timid mechanically.. here’s a simple DIY to guide you. I had a video but I couldn’t find the original file. Although this should be very straightforward. Enjoy. 

Tools Needed:

  • 10mm wrench
  • shop towels / paper towels

Parts Needed:

  • New O-ring P/N: 91345-RDA-A01 (orange)

If I left anything out, feel free to add it. I changed the PS with new Honda PSF. I might be switching up to Redline Syn PSF since it’s been almost a year since the change, let me know if you guys want a DIY on it.

    Hi,
    This might be a stupid question, but I want to be sure. When you put the new O-ring on the inlet pipe, should you push it down around the bottom (it has to stretch a bit) or should it just be on top of that when you reinsert the inlet pipe? It seemed like the inlet pipe wouldn’t really seat that well back into the pump when I left it sort of ‘on top’ but when I pushed it down and then reinserted it, my power steering pump doesn’t seem happy, at all! Sorry if this is a basic question, but I figure if I need to ask, somebody else might need to know…

    I\’ve read another site that mentioned you should be careful torquing the bolt. Is this really something that I need to worry about enough to get a torque wrench? Thanks!

    Does anyone know the specs on that 10mm bolt? I dropped it and it’s long gone…

    The bolt, Acura part#(91350-P8C-A01)

    Torque it to 11 N·m(8 lb-ft).

    Describing this problem.

    SYMPTOM
    A moan or whine is heard when turning the steering
    wheel when the engine is cold. There may be air
    bubbles or foam in the power steering reservoir. The
    noise usually goes away when the engine warms up.

    PROBABLE CAUSE
    Air is entering the power steering pump through the
    inlet joint O-ring. This causes bubbles to form in the
    power steering fluid, leading to reduced pump
    performance.

    CORRECTIVE ACTION
    Replace the O-ring on the power steering pump inlet
    joint.

    REPAIR PROCEDURE
    NOTE: Some vehicles affected by Service Bulletin
    08-016, Safety Recall: 2004-08 TL Power Steering
    Feed Hose Leak, were not correctly repaired in that the
    power steering inlet joint O-ring was not replaced.
    Before you replace the inlet joint O-ring in this
    procedure, check its color:
    • If the O-ring is not colored orange, it was not
    previously replaced, and this repair will correct the
    power steering noise at cold start-up.
    • If the O-ring is orange, it was already replaced under
    S/B 08-016. Continue with normal troubleshooting to
    find the cause of the noise.

    Done in 10 minutes by a non-machanical type of guy. I also put a half of a 8 1/2 x 11 paper under the assembly to catch the bolt if it fell.

    The old o-ring was stuck in the assembly but I didn’t initially recognize it as it was so close to the opening … instead of deep like I expected. I used tweezers to get it off as the metal and oil were too hot at the time.

    Also, after opening I put a rolled up half a piece of paper towel under the drip to catch the tablespoon full of oil that dribbled out.

    Closed up nicely and now I’m looking forward to a good noiseless cold morning start up tomorrow.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! This has been driving me crazy for months. Found this tutorial, bought the part and fixed it in less than ten minutes. Started car in 10 degree temp after the fix and the noise is gone. For those hesitant about making the repair on their own – I’m not a car guy, a bit nervous about doing it and I can tell you that this was SIMPLE. And the part only cost me $1.80 at the Honda dealer. $1.80 and ten minutes of my time. Thanks!

    I replaced o-ring with orange one I bought thru Honda dealer and it still is making leaking whining noise. I don’t know why, anyone??
