Replace the Window Seals on any year Chevrolet Silverado

Window seals are designed for two purposes. The first is to keep rain and other weather elements outside of a vehicle. The second is to hold the window from rattling in place when it is rolled up (see Reference 1). In a Chevrolet Silverado, replacing the window seals ensures that your four side cab windows and the rear cab window are kept secure and dry

Materials Needed

To remove the old window seal, you will need a flat-head screwdriver to pry loose the window seal. You will also need a Phillips-head screwdriver to install the new window piece. If the new seal is longer than the perimeter of the Silverado’s window, you may need a razor blade to cut the seal. Also make sure that the new seal includes nylon or plastic clips to attach it to the truck’s frame. For the rear window, you will need a specialized seal designed for the Silverado’s rear panel. If the seal does not fully hold on the back window, you will need silicone caulk and wax paper to complete the seal manually (see Reference 2).

Side Cab Windows

Begin with the front driver and passenger windows on the Silverado. Make sure the windows are completely rolled down. Starting with the driver’s window, pry off the first section of old window seal with a flat-head screwdriver. Peel off the old weather stripping. Using the flat-head screwdriver, pry the clips holding the weather stripping to release the base from the door frame.Next, line up the tabs on the new window seals with those on the door frame and install the base. Insert the soft seal with the wider side facing the interior of the cab and continue to install it along the length of the Silverado’s frame. Since the window seals are custom designed for every model, it should fit exactly along all sides of the window except the bottom. However, if there is any excess stripping, carefully trim it using a razor (see Reference 2). Continue with the passenger window and the two rear windows doing one replacement at a time.

Rear Cab Window

The rear cab window seal is removed in the same way as the side cab windows. The soft stripping is generally one long piece of foam or rubber, and the base may be in one or more pieces depending on the manufacturer. To install the seal, begin in one corner and work around the perimeter of the window. Install the soft seal in the same manner (see Reference 3).Unlike the other four windows, the Silverado’s rear window may have difficulty creating a tight seal. To ensure that it is waterproof, place a piece of waxed paper between the window and the frame and close the window. Run silicone caulk between the seal and the wax paper, avoiding the glass. Let the caulk dry before opening the window and removing the wax paper. Paint the caulk to match the window seal if desired.
