Removing the starter from the Lexus GS400 is uncomplicated enough that there is no need to take the car to a garage. A car owner with no experience can remove the starter from the car in 30 to 45 minutes with the basic tools found in most toolboxes. You can get access to the starter on the Lexus from the engine compartment, so there’s no need to crawl under the car, as you have to do on most vehicles.

1) Open the engine compartment and disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the nut on the terminal with a wrench.
2) Unhook the transmission shift control cable. This is a black or silver cable connected to the transmission. You have to manipulate it to unhook it.
3) Remove the main power cable going to the starter. Use a wrench to remove the nut and unplug the wiring harness from the solenoid.
4) Remove the transmission cable clamp from the starter using a wrench to remove the bolt. Remove the bolts from the starter with a socket and ratchet. Remove the starter from the engine.
